What does it mean to feel surrounded yet alone? In a world where we are constantly connected, why do we often experience such deep disconnection?
Navigating through crowded spaces—malls, high-rises and mass transport—I am often struck by the sensation of being part of a collective yet simultaneously disconnected. We turn to our digital lives for comfort, seeking refuge in the presence of others, yet remain separated by screens and cameras. The pervasiveness of technology creates a tension between connectivity and the absence of physical closeness.
To distil these contradictory feelings, I draw on familiar imagery, deconstructing and abstracting it through techniques such as drawings, photographs, woodcuts, etchings, and stop-frame animation. I then layer, shape, and recompose these elements, imposing structure and flow. Guided by the principles of materiality, repetition, spontaneity, and precision, I explore the tension between messiness and order, striving to find my own version of balance.
